Tips For Moving With A Mattress
Whether you're moving across town or across the country, you'll most likely want to take your mattress with you. There are several different ways that you can prepare the furniture piece prior to moving, and protect it during the move, to ensure it arrives in good condition.
In most cases, you will most likely save money by taking your mattress with you, rather than selling it and buying another one at your new location. This is especially true if it is newer and in good condition because you probably won't get top dollar for a used mattress. Also, if you had the mattress customized to your body, it may be hard to find another one with a perfect fit.
Mattresses, especially full, queen, and king sizes, take up a lot of truck space, so make a strategic plan for where they will go before you start loading up. The mattresses may even be able to act as a soft buffer for more delicate items, such as antique furniture or electronics.
If you paid a lot of money for your mattresses, or if it was customized for you, it's important to protect your investment. The right precautions will keep it free of rips, tears, and stains. Here are some additional tips for moving with a mattress:
1. Clean It
Prior to wrapping the mattress up for a move, clean it to remove any dirt, dust, debris, or food particles, which could attract pests, especially if you'll need to store it for a while. Strip the mattress of any covers, and then vacuum the surface with a hose attachment, paying special attention to any nooks and crannies.
If there are any stains, work them out using a soft cloth dipped into an enzyme cleaner, or a mild dishwashing liquid and a warm water mixture. Be careful not to saturate the mattress, and allow it to fully air-dry. If your mattress is made of memory foam, avoid getting it wet at all.
2. Move It
After the mattress is clean and dry, it's time to wrap it up and move it. Start by placing a waterproof mattress protector over it. You can also wrap the mattress with bubble wrap or furniture blankets for added protection.
Either move the mattress to the moving truck with the help of another person or place it on a large furniture dolly and wheel it out. If you have enough room in the truck, it's best to position all types of mattresses flat, but box springs can stand on their sides.
